When it comes to lighting, choosing the right globe (bulb) can make all the difference—not just in how a room looks, but in energy usage, mood, and even safety. With so many types available today, from LED to halogen to smart globes, understanding your options is key to finding the best match for your space.

Know Your Fitting

The first step is identifying the right fitting. Common base types include E27 (screw), B22 (bayonet), and GU10 (twist-and-lock). Always check your existing fixture to ensure compatibility before buying a new globe..

Understand the Globe Types

LED Globes

Are the most energy-efficient and long-lasting. They're perfect for almost every space—offering various shapes, dimmable options, and colour temperatures.

Halogen Globes

Produce bright, white light and are great for task lighting, but they use more energy and generate more heat.

Fluorescent Globes

Are ideal for larger or commercial spaces, providing bright light with lower energy use than halogens but not as efficient as LEDs.

Incandescent globes

Incandescents are a dying technology, but still very much in use. Often called filament globes they are affordable, but don’t last anywhere near as long as LEDs.

Choose the Right Brightness & Colour Temperature

Brightness is measured in lumens. The higher the lumens, the brighter the light. A 600–800 lumen LED globe is usually enough for general room lighting.

Colour temperature is measured in Kelvins (K):

  • Warm White (2700K–3000K): Cosy and relaxing, ideal for bedrooms and living areas.
  • Cool White (4000K): Crisp and clean, great for kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Daylight (5000K–6500K): Mimics natural light, perfect for reading or work areas.

Shape Matters

Globe shapes impact both the style and light spread. Choose from classic A60 shapes, decorative filament styles, candle globes for chandeliers, or reflector types for task lighting.

Dimmable or Not?

Not all globes are dimmable, and not all dimmers work with every bulb. If you need dimming, make sure your globe and dimmer switch are compatible.
